A History of the Cupcake

July 28th, 2010 by Cupcake Crafts

The term cupcake was first mentioned in Eliza Leslie’s Receipts Cookbook in 1828. In previous centuries, before muffin tins were so widely available, cupcakes were baked in individual heavy pottery cups. The cakes were named after the cups they were baked in and the name “cupcake” is now given to any small cake the size of a teacup.

There is another school of thought that the term “cupcake” refers to the cakes ingredients being weighed in a standard sized cup. However, the majority of these recipes were baked in tins as loaves. Later these cakes became known as quarter cakes because they were made up of four ingredients.
